Description

Way back in 1944 the author of THE AIR BATTLE OF MALTA wrote: “The spirit and endurance of the Maltese, which played so great a part in winning the battle, can only be done justice in a book devoted to their problems and triumphs while living besieged upon a target of rock.”

WHEN MALTA STOOD ALONE is such a book. In the space of two and a half years, starting with the first raid on June11, 1940, Malta suffered 3,340 air raids in which over 14,000 tons of bombs were dropped, 1,500 people were killed and 2,000 seriously injured, and 9,000 premises were destroyed or badly damaged. In May 1942 food-stocks grew desperately meager, rations were halved, starvation threatened to force the Island into surrender…

WHEN MALTA STOOD ALONE is a tribute to “a heroism and devotion that will long be famous in history.
