The appalling losses suffered during Great Siege of 1565 did little to avert the knights from their holy mission as defenders of the Christian faith. From the ashes of war they erected the fortress-city of Valletta; the southernmost castle of Christendom in Europe and the scourge of the Ottoman Empire.
