Description

The Cholera Morbus Malta, 1837

Anthony Zarb-Dimech is not a new name in the writing of ground-breaking books.  This was the case (among other works)  on the struggles of the Maltese Islands’ population during the First and Second World Wars. This book is about a different kind of ‘war’… the war against disease.

Resilience in Pandemics is the first of its kind, focusing primarily on the cholera pandemic of 1837 that visited Malta and Gozo in the summer months of 1837.  This publication examines the roles of the civil, military and religious organisations in their fight against the disease. In the process, Anthony Zarb-Dimech has drawn comparisons between the COVID-19 pandemic and the cholera of 1837.

The author has included material unearthed for the first time such as lists of persons who died of cholera in different Casals, daily reports of the cholera and other official documentation issued by the British authorities governing the Islands. Also included are chapters by local researchers who gladly accepted to have their research included in this book.

As the title of this book suggests, Resilience in Pandemics is a fine example of the Maltese Islands’ resilience in the face of the scourge of disease over the centuries.  This legacy lives on to the present day.
