Description

Performance at work can be adversely affected when an employe is experiencing personal problems originating from their home, family, work or personal life.

Examples of circumstances which can trigger a personal problem for an individual may include one or any combination of the following:

  • Money
  • Children, their health, education, social life or behaviour
  • Health problems of the employee or of other members of their family
  • Marital difficulties and/or separation
  • Interpersonal relationship at work with colleagues or superiors
  • Problems relating to drug or alcohol abuse or due to a gambling problem
  • Family relationship.

It is impossible to develope a finite list since personal problems come in all shapes and sizes and affect people differently. What may be an insignificant issue to one person may be another person’s crisis.

People also have different ways of dealing with their problems, personal or otherwise. Some may choose to confront their issues others may prefer to ignore them or push them to the background. Whatever the situation, it is likely hat the effects of a personal problem will in some way manifest itself at the workplace, either through conscious or unconscious behaviour.

This seminar organised by the Social Assistance Secretariat of the Catolic Action and the Foundation For Human Ressources Development, sought to generate debate on this important aspect of managing people at work, in order to raise awareness and influence action.
