This twelfth book by Richard J Caruana is being presented after many years of study and world-wide research for photographs of the period. In fact, illustrations form the backbone of this book. Until now, wartime photographs had to be accepted for what they were and these were generally of poor quality. Considering wartime censorship and scarcity of photographic films and processing materials, it is a miracle that photos of any quality at all have survived. Latest technology in electronic photo scanning and retouching has made it possible to bring most of these old pictures back to what they would have looked like when taken over fifty years ago. Over 400 photographs reproduced within the covers of this book have been individually enhanced and restored – a great labour of love which hopefully will be fully appreciated by all.
