Description
A prose workbook for students of English Literature in secondary schools
Prose: Get ready for SEC English Literature supports students and teachers in responding to an excerpt from a work of fiction. This workbook is an invaluable aid for private candidates sitting for the SEC English Literature examination. It also provides useful grounding for the compulsory assignment in school-based assessment which tests students’ ability to prepare a short essay on an unseen prose passage. An overarching purpose of these workbooks is to expose learners to a range of literary genres, perhaps fuelling their interest in reading fiction for pleasure and encouraging personal growth.
In particular, the workbooks provide practice in close reading starting at the level of meaning and rising to an appreciation of the use of language and literary devices.
Each Unit is divided into two parts. Part A consists of a series of questions that deal with meaning, viewpoint and style. Part B is closely modelled on the SEC controlled paper which serves as preparation for both the SEC English Literature examination and classroom-based assessment.
Scaffolding is provided for learners to gradually become confident with writing about prose excerpts through tasks that require them to complete, or put in order, and in some way engage with the text. This practice is based on the belief that learners need models that help them understand what is expected of them.
Workbook 1 and 2 each contain six units and a separate publication contains the key.
