Description

The present collection of sixteen original research papers, each written in a vivid and authoritative manner, seeks to understand Malta’s position in its broader Mediterranean context, its gradual social and political transformation, its mental habits, aspects of its urban and economic development, its military and architectural rality, its varied artistic life, the effects of the Englishtenment on its Church State relations, and the place it held in the complex politics of revolutionary France.

There is no doubt that behind the changes which early modern Malta progressively experienced from 1530 to 1798 lay the powerful dynamism and ressources of the Hospitaller institution of the Order of St John. But, on the other hand, was not the nature of the island itself and its geographical location an equally powerful force which during the course of over two-and-a-half centuries of history was partly to determine the direction of the Order’s own development and decline? This volume is therefore qs much concerned with early modern Malta as it is with the Order of St John.
