Description
Connecting the Harbour Towns O.F. Gollcher & Sons 1897-1959 celebrates the steam ferries recalled by the popular ditty Lanċa ġejja u oħra sejra. There was more to the ferries than the song; they contributed to the development of the harbour towns, particularly Sliema, introduced commuting by short sea journeys, demonstrated the skills of local shipbuilders, accentuated inter-company rivalry and, by ousting the dgħajsas, and being in turn driven out by motor buses, epitomised the eternal mutability of things. This work also celebrates another exciting venture of O.F. Gollcher & Sons, one of the oldest Maltese entrepreneurs. The company, which is commemorating its 165th anniversary in 2019, remains true to the founder’s motto: ‘FRAMAT’ – forward.
