Description

Antoine Camilleri retains a special place in Maltese Contemporary Art. He has been considered by his colleagues, friends and students as a loving teacher and artist who trough the hardship of life, matured from the extraordinary energy and wild cries of youth to the meditative silence of old age. At the Beaux Arts in France, Antoine came under the influence of his teacher Nicolas Pierre Untersteller, who specialized in stained-glass commission by the Augustinian Community in Tarxien. Antoine’s profound religious convictions helped him focus on the crucifixion scene as a Divine Tragedy seeing in it the glory of the Resurrection. In many ways this book is partly a narrative and an account of the author’s involvement. with art and the artist. It is a fitting tribute that comes only one year after the artist’s demise. Antoine Camilleri has been to many a true friend, a special mentor to many students and a unique artist who pioneered a modern aesthetic in the field of the visual arts in Malta.
This book has also a detailed interview with the artist that throws light on this symbolic language and artistic credo. With over 450 illustrations, this book highlights Antoine Camilleri’s artistic genius in a way that the general public, the art student and the scholar alike can appreciate.
