Description

Our Dougalls and their stories

My records indicate that our story began in Falkirk, Scotland, with the protagonist of the time being an unknown Dougall born in 1590. Among his children was Thomas, the great-grandfather of Allan. During that time, Malta was still under the rule of the Knights of St John.

Allan went on to marry Helen Waddel. Their son, John Douglass Dougall fathered Thomas and later married Juliana Spencer. Thomas and Juliana gave birth to John, who went on to become the most significant of all the Dougalls.

John was born on the 25th of June, 1832. He arrived in Malta on HMS Liffy. John married twice. His union with his second wife begot our Nannu Ton. I consider Nannu Ton and Nanna Vitor to have been the most important Dougalls, for having built such a huge family. Nanna Vitor’s father was the famous Carmelo Sciberras, known as ‘is-Sanicc’, a prominent tobacco merchant. He was born in Valletta, and married twice. Nanna Vitor was the eldest from his second marriage. She was a Romano born in Senglea. Carmelo was buried in the family grave, bought by his wife on the day he died but strangely enough his wife is not buried with him but with the Vassallos. Nineteen years after his death, his remains were transported to another grave, this time belonging to the family of his daughter.

The Dougalls’ story is colorful. Having starting in Scotland, and continued in Jamaica and eventually Malta, it makes for some interesting and enlightening reading, as one follows the trail from its origins till the present day.
