Description

During one of Europe’s darkest hours, a group of people whose fellow countrymen were butchering each other, were forced to share a corner of Cottonera’s fortifications.

Between 1914 and 1920, during an absurd frenzy of mechanized brutality, Germans and British, Austrians and Maltese, Greeks and Turks, Bulgarians and Egyptians, shared the confined spaces of Fort Verdala, of St Clement, of San Salvatore, of Polverista.

Victor and vanquished, jailor and prisoner shared their joys and suspicions, played music and performed theatre, protested and tilled their gardens, committed murder, prayed to their God, longed for home.

The Salter Album witnesses this …

…a sign of shared humanity.
