ISBN is a unique international identifier for monographic publications, with the ten-digit number replacing the handling of long bibliographic descriptive records. Time and staff are saved, copying mistakes are avoided.
The ISBN also allows compilation and updating of book trade directories, like Books in Pint. Information on available books can be found easily. Ordering and distribution of books is mainly executed by ISBN -a fast and efficient method indeed.
With this publication, Publishers Enterprises Group (PEG) Ltd, the official agents of the Berlin, Germany based international Standard Book Numbering (ISBN) system, hope to capture, on a cross-reference list, the massive work done so far in relation to Maltese publications within the ISBN network. It is in itself a special service to both publishers and authors on these Islands as well as a timely confirmation of the new responsibilities and challenges ahead and the professional prowess required to meet them.
It should be added that for the purposes of the ISBN system, books and other items to be numbered include: printed books and pamphlets including Brailled and maps and non-printed books such as educational, video and transparencies, books on cassettes or CDs (talking books), microform publications, electronic publications, machine-readable tapes, diskettes, CD-ROMs and Internet Publications.
