Then came the Knights of St John who during their stay of two and half centuries turned Malta into a gem of architectural wealth and culture syill to be treasured and enjoyed till these very days. There followed a brief occupation by the French who were soon pushed out by the resourcefl Maltese who then welcomed a British occupation which is still flourishing after the end of the second millennium.
It had to be Joseph Attard who with his known gifts of economy and broad narrative sweep could place this superb chronicle into one volume without missing any of the politicking, drama, sacrifice and heroism with which this strory is chequered. Moreover this giffted author uses a style of writing Maltese history against a backdropp of historical affairs from all over Europe as if to empisize where Malta’s ties had always been and should remain in the future. He then uses simple and readable language to write of everyday matters that do normally feature histories. This goes to make this narrative very interesting to both historians and laymen, as well as to foreigners who have some form of interest in Malta and the Maltese.
