Description

This book records the vanished world of speronaras, lateen boats and the motley fleet of steam and motor ships that provided the Gozo-Malta connection from 1885 until the commissioning of the modern ferries Ta’ Pinu, Gaudos and Malita for Gozo Channel Line,  whose speed, safety, comfort and regularity belie the fact that this was not always the case and it is only now that the service can be taken for granted. The development of Gozo from 1885 to the setting up of Gozo Channel Line in 1979 is largely due to enterprising merchant families and successive colonial and Maltese Governments who, literally speaking, bridged the physical, psychological and commercial barriers between the islanders, connecting them from Mġarr to Marfa or the Grand Harbour and unwittingly blurring age-old differences and prejudices.
