BEGINNING MALTESE is a user friendly, self teaching course that will give you a basic knowledge of Maltese and will enable you to understand and speak the language.
This textbook comprises twelve lessons and two compact discs. The lessons are structured to prevent you from groaning under the weight of too many grammatical rules, though some general rules regarding word formation and verb conjugation are given.
These rules are simply explained and should not be found at all daunting. Each lesson contains the most frequently used words and expressions in Maltese, while revision exercises with answers help you to go over the main points again.
The more vocabulary you memorise, the more you will be able to both understand and speak the language. The accompanying audio material therefore plays an important supporting role. The CDs contain words and expressions found in the textbook as spoken by native speakers of Maltese and can be played wherever you are, at work or at home, while exercising, driving the car, or performing tasks that do not require much concentration.
LYDIA SCIRIHA is Professor of Linguistics at the University of Malta where, for a number of years, she directed the University’s Language Laboratory Complex. She has authored and co-authored eleven books, and edited two journal issues. Her books include the language course Beginning Maltese (Book and 2CDs) and The Maltese Interactive Picture Dictionary: An Interactive Multimedia Computer Program for Teaching Maltese Spelling, Vocabulary and Pronunciation (Book and CD ROM).
