Description

4th Century B.C. – 1600

The Maltese language is, at least, one thousand years old, as it owes its birth to the Arab period {870-1091 A. D.), with the first seeds having probably been sown in 1048-49 A. D., after the re-population of the Maltese archipelago (Brincat 2011: 33-63).

Yet, despite the millennial history of this fascinating language, the earliest documents of the written Maltese word are few and very far apart. Consequently, the recovery of any material going back to the Maltese medieval-early modern period provides the hungry researcher with “virgin” documentation which could shed new light on the linguistic historical- cultural vicissitudes of the Maltese people.
