Description
Perhaps due to Malta’s important location on the central European-African migratory flyway, ornithology has been studied on the islands for centuries. However, while much has been published on Malta’s avifauna, the Malta Breeding Bird Atlas 2008 is the first publication to map the island wide distribution of all the country’s breeding birds.
Using methodologies and classification that have also been adopted in other European Atlas projects, the results presented is this Atlas create an important benchmark for future Maltese bird atlases. The Malta Breeding Bird Atlas 2008 therefore provides a standardised approach to assess future chamges in breeding bird populations and distributions. Understanding these changes will be critical il Malta is to safeguard its breeding birds into the future.
