From neolithic hill-forts to the barbed wire and electronic barriers of today, fortifications have always had a greater impact on the landscape than almost any other man-made structure. Whether regarded as architecture or weapons system, their fascination is undeniable, and this lively new journal is the first to be devoted entirely to their history.
It will describe and analyse both permanent and temporary fortifications, usually based on surviving examples, and will cover all aspects of their design, construction and present-day conservation and presentation to the public. The wider implications of such defences of their employment to the psychological effects on their inhabitants. Related topics will include weapons and equipment, siege methods and countermeasures, and biographical material on the great military engineers.
