Essays in Memory of Dun Ġwann Azzopardi

The thirty original essays gathered in this volume acknowledge the achievements of the priest and scholar Monsignor John Azzopardi (1937-2021), known to his friends and colleagues as Dun Ġwann. Reflecting the breadth of his interests, the book brings together archivists, art critics, historians, architects, musicologists, paper conservators and other experts and writers, to explore aspects of Dun Ġwann’s beloved Melitensia.

The central themes of his incessant activity feature in the essays – ranging from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century and touching upon points of interest and personalities linked to Mdina and Rabat, ecclesiastical history, the cult of St Paul, early modern travel, archives, music, the Order of St John, art and artists, and one of the big passions of his life, the Wignacourt Museum complex in Rabat including St Paul’s Grotto. The final section reflects upon his life and works, including a biographical review of his scholarly output.

Edited by Petra Caruana Dingli and Mario Gauci
