Description

This drawing by Shellinkx (1664-1665) is probably the oldest one showing the tower and chapel. When the Order of Malta decided to erect a watch tower in St Paul’s Bay, the plan was presumably entrustedto Vittorio Cassar who was of the opinion that it had to be erected where the church of St Paul used to stand. It was therefore decided that another church dedicated to the saint had to be erected in the vicinity. These two places are therefore linked in history. On 10 February 2010 the Wignacourt Tower celebrates 400 years from when the first stone was laid. This booklet gives a detailed history of this tower as well as of the Chapel of St Paul nearby.
