Every icon speaks for itself, but sometimes its history adds depth, colour, and resonance to the message. The Icon of Our Lady of Damascus – “a thing of great beauty and historical importance in addition to being an expression of faith” (David Talbot Rice) – was venerated in Rhodes and in a number of European cities, but is now a great treasure of the Greek Catholics in Malta.
